The Bill that introduces new regulations for septic tanks was passed by the Seanad

A Bill introducing new regulations for septic tanks has been passed by the Seanad.

The Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011 was passed by 31 votes to 19.

The Bill is being sent to President Michael D Higgins with an Early Signature Motion, which requests him to sign the Bill within five days.

The Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan has said it was necessary for the Bill to be enacted by 3 February.

On this date a rejoinder will be submitted to the European Court of Justice stating that the necessary legislative measures have been put in place to protect ground water.
